The housing problem in Auckland City is one of systematic clearance and redevelopment of central areas, is the conclusion of the Town Planning Committee of the Auckland City Council, which will report to the Council this evening, on the basis of the City Engineer’s housing survey report. ’ The committee commends the Government for initiating the housing survey legislation, stating that in no other way could conditions have been brought to light. “While housing is proceeding in the new areas, chronic decadence still persists at the core,” states the report, which adds that the survey emphasises the necessity for extended powers for demolitions, control of occupancy, and surveillance of by-law enforcement.
