KUMARA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.) At the monthly' meeting of the Kumara Borough Council, there were present: The Mayor (Mr A. B. Spiers), Crs. Reedy, Murphy, Inglis, Gilbert, Hanna, McDonald. A letter was received from L. J. Barry, secretary of the Local Bodies’ employees’ Union regarding wages to be paid to employees, and stating that the men would have to join the union.—lt was decided that the Town Clerk procure a copy of the award.
The Council decided to protest against the speed limits set out in a letter from the Commissioner of Transport, who suggested that the road at the Otira end of the borough boundary for a distance of ten chains, and the Kumara Junction road from the borough boundary for a distance of 12 chains, should be excluded from the speed restriction limit of 30 miles per hour.
It was pointed on I that the proposed limits would constitute a danger to children from Dillmans attending the Kumara schools, also to those who made use of the swimming baths, situated midway between Kumara and Dillmans. On the Kumara Junction road, for a distance of approximately half a mile, there was a similar danger to school children. The Health Inspector’s monthly report was received.
The chairmen of the various committees reported on works carried out during the month. It was resolved that the following be the rates for the year ending 31/3/38: A general rate of Id in the £, a hospital rate of Id in the £, a special rate of Id in the £, and a lighting rate of Id in the £. Accounts amounting to £7O were passed for payment. The Clerk of the Local Government (Amalgamated Schemes) Bill wrote, stating the special committee appointed would commence the hearing on November 30 to hear evidence from local bodies desirous of placing before it, their views on the principles and provisions of the Bill.—Resolved, on the motion of Cr. Reedy, that the Council was of the opinion that it would be in the interests of the ratepayers when two or more local bodies could not agree to amalgamate, that the Bill should provide for a referendum being taken. kJ r>rien, ivi.x'. x The District Employment Officer, Greymouth, wrote regarding the filling in of three abandoned miningshafts in the borough.—Resolved that Mr J. Smeaton, mining supervisor, be asked to visit Kumara, and confer with the Mayor. It was decided that Crs. McDonald and. Murphy make enquiries regarding a flame-thrower, and if found suitable for the destruction of blackberries and gorse, that authority be given to purchase one; that a letter be written to Mr J. Hurren regarding the dangerous state of two buildings in Main Street, and request that they either be repaired or demolished; that the secretary of the Rugby football team be again written to regarding the removal of pole in front of the Recreation Ground.
