TENNIS

DISTRICT MATCHES Grey Retain President’s Trophy Greymouth Club were successful yesterday in retaining the Presidential Trophy in their match with United Club played on the Grey Club’s courts. Greymouth won by 4 matches 61 sets lo 2 matches 58 games. The great interest taken in the match was demonstrated by the large gallery of spectators who were treated to a fine display of tennis. The United top man, P. Warnes, played excellent tennis throughout the afternoon, and his recovery of apparent winning shots was, at times, remarkable. Greymouth won two of the four singles contests, and both double matches. In the first men’s doubles game Warnes and E. Pattinson were the outstanding players, the latter showing a fine return to his old form. This game was the only one to go to three sets and the play throughout was equal to the best, standard seen in the centres. Plimmer, a newcomer to the United Club and to Greymouth inter-club tennis, played a solid game to defeat Cheyne in straight sets, and should be an acquisition to the United Club. Results, with Greymouth Club players mentioned first, were:— Singles: Halstead beat Warnes 4/6, 3/6. Ashby beat McKay 6/3, 6/4. Cheyne beat Plimmer 3/6, 1/6. Pattinson beat Garth 6/4, 6/1. Despite the margin separating the teams, play was by no means uninteresting, and some close and keen contests were witnessed. For Greymouth, Halstead, Cheyne, Pattinson, and Mesdames Halstead and McGlashan were successful in winning all their games. Greymouth secured 10 of the 12 singles games, and lost only two ladies’ singles matches. Halstead easily accounted for Baddeley, the top Runanga man, but Miss M. DISTRICT LADDER. Anyone may issue a challenge for any position on the district ladder up till December 31, and after that challenges may be made against the bottom six players only. The system of playing the interclub matches to. schedule is proving very satisfactory, and by playing sets of 6-up, the teams of six ladies and six men are not unwieldy. Many players prefer games of 9-up, but unless three courts are available, it is difficult to finish the match in the afternoon. J
