At a sitting of the Children’s Court yesterday morning, a boy aged 15 years appeared and was dealt with on charges of breaking and entering, theft of motor registration plates, forging and uttering a cheque and also with the conversion of a motor car.

The State Placement Service, Greymouth, secured permanent positions for four men and one youth during the week, temporary work for 2 men, and casual work for 2 men. The annual Runanga Juvenile Ball last night at the Miners’ Hall, was attended by four hundred children, mostly in fancy dress and over two hundred adults. The rail-car proceeding from Hokitika to Greymouth on Thursday afternoon met with a slight accident at the New River combined rail and road traffic bridge. A light delivery van, driven by Mr A. A. Ironside, proceeding in the same direction as the rail-car. reached the bridge at the same time. The van swung out to miss the rail-car, but was struck a glancing blow, which badly dented the rear mudguard on the driver’s side. The bodywork of the rail-car was slightly dented, and it was able to proceed without delay.

For the purpose of discussing proposals made by the Union Steam Ship Co., Ltd., some time ago for the shifting of two of the large cranes on the Greymouth wharf to the lowerberthages, to facilitate the handling of the larger vessels trading to the port by enabling them to load both coal and timber without the necessity of shifting up or down the wharf while partially loaded, a conference was held on Thursday between representatives of the Greymouth Harbour Board, the Railway Department, and shipping interests. After a lengthy discussion, it was decided to recommend the General Manager of Railways to put the suggestion into effect, and the cranes will be shifted to irew locations as soon as his approval is received.

Sentence of three months’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed on William Venice Aitken, anas William Vanis ,Foote of no fixed abode, who appeared before Mr. Raymond Ferner S.M. at the Magistrate’s Court, Greymouth yesterday on a charge of being idle and disorderly ana that he had insufficient means of support. Accused pleaded guilty and had nothing to say. Detective Sergeant H. E. Knight who conducted the prosecution said that the accused was a single man 41 years of age who was discharged from prison on July 3 after serving a term of five months. He had returned to Greymouth and had done no work. He cadged his living by begging from houses and boats, and was the terror of the places he visited at night. He had convictions for breaking, entering, forgery and several charges of vagrancy.
