CRESCENDO OF SPEED

ILL OF MODERN LIFE. LONDON, August 3. “Why do so many people go to pseudo psychologists, or what I cal! ‘teacup readers’?” asked Dr. Eric B. Johnston, a Toronto osteopathic physician, who is visiting London. “It is the result of sheer fatigue, and an abnormal call on their reservices of energy,” he added. “They get a temporary boost and are told something to which they cling. That boost, however, leaves them more fatigued. “We are living on a crescendo of speed, and must quieten down the pace. Two or three out of every five women are afraid of having children because of excessive use of their resources of energy. “Children are going to the kinema or listening with rapt attention to *lie wireless. These are devitalising influences. Motoring demagnetises persons, find in rushing for the train or bus they use more energy than they can spare. “Complicated street noises are making inroads into nerve resources. A man plays a round of golf because he is told that he ought to do so, and probably he is not in a condition to use more energy, with the result that collapse follows. “Holiday-makers lie out in the sun drying up the moisture, but it is the moisture that is supplying energy. They are devitalising themselves. Four out of ten have arthritis, and three out of five have a pain in the lower part of the back, spelling fatigue.” The possibility of a physically decadent Empire was felt more at the rim than at the hub, Dr. Johnston concluded, and therefore he had come to the hub.
