The beautiful weather of the past couple of days prompts the expectation of a fine spring season Hokitika members of the West Coast Rugby representative team to meet Canterbury at Christchurch on Saturday, leave by the rail-car for Christchurch to-morrow night. At Addington Market yesterday, sales included 6 steers, £l6 7s 6d to £lB, and 6 steers at £l7 2s 6d to £l9 7s 6d, for the estate of W. Diedrichs (Kokatahi). The following candidates of Miss M. Davies, were successful in a grammar of music examination held in Julylast: Grade 4 (rudiments), June Armstrong 95; Grade 2, Mona Lasserre 86; Grade 1, Audrey Davies 96. (Full marks were 99, and pass 66). The death took place at Oamaru last night of Mrs. Barbara Laurenson, aged 73. Mr. Lyall Laurenson (Hokitika), and Mrs. R. W. Cooper (Wataroa), are a son and daughter respectively, there being five other members of the family. . At the Caledonian Society’s ingleside there was a large gathering last evening, when items were given byMr. Couch (songs), Miss Walton (step and tap dances), Misses J. and V. Heenan, Hagar and Saxon (step, dances). Messrs McGregor and Collett were in charge of the programme Music was well supplied by the Rhythm Dance Band, Mr. Schroeder and Piper J. King. The following are the best cards returned for the September L.G.U. nogey: —Mrs. Harper, Miss Rhodes, each 4 down, 21 points; Miss N. Yarrall, 5 down, 1 point; Miss M. E. Anderson, 6 down; Miss A. Mclntosh, 6 down; Mrs. Murdoch, 7 down. The annual cross-country race of the Hokitika District High School, was held yesterday afternoon, over a course of about three miles from the school via Park and Livingstone Streets, along the Kanieri tram-line past the mill, across paddocks to Blue Spur road and back to the school via Hampden Street. The course was rough and heavy in places. The following are the results: Senior championship: W. Dove 1, R. Miller and R. Thomas, dead-heat, 2, G. Wormington 4, D. Johnston 5, W Haworth 6. Winner’s time, 21min. 45 secs. Junior Championship: J Keenan 1, J. Clausen 2, I. Richards 3. A. Kilcullen 4, J. Ashley 5, W. Johnson 6. Time 24min. 15secs. Senior Sealed Handicap:—A. O’Halloran 1, R. Thomas 2, J. Stoop 3, W. Haworth 4, T. Simpson 5, A. Parry 6. Junior sealed handicap:—A. Kilcullen 1, N. Moore 2, T. Muir 3, C. Thompson 4, H. Dalziel 5, W. Johnson 6.
