SCHOOL JUBILEE

WOODVILLE CELEBRATIONS. WOODVILLE, September 15. Over one thousand attended the commencement of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Woodville Public School this afternoon, and the assemblage would have been greater if the proceedings had not been affected by intermittent rain. Ex-teachers present included Rev. A. Stevenson, of Lower Hutt (headmaster from 1892 to 1920), Mrs S. Murphy, of Woodville (first mistress), and Mrs James Beagley, of Hamilton. The Mayor, Mr H. P. Horne, himself one of the oldest pupils, and Mr R. R. Johnston (chairman of the committee) welcomed the visitors. There was a brief address by the Rew Stevenson, who paid a tribute to Mr Horne, who had carried out Mayoral duties for so long, showing that trust was placed in him by the townspeople. During the afternoon, a portrait of the first master, Mr W. G. Crawford, was unveiled by Mrs Murphy, who lit a candle on the jubilee cake.
