"MURDER GOES TO COLLEGE.” Lynne Overman and Roscoe Karns made their first appearance together as a comedy team in Paramount’s “Murder Goes to College,” a breezy mystery story which opens at the Regent Theatre to-day, and they score with a bang! Overman as the detective solves the murder, and Karns as a reporter helps him and wins beautiful Marsha Hunt in the process. The story deals with the murder of a college professor who used knowledge of mathematics to beat the policy game. The professor was in league with gang-leader Larry Crabbe, and just before, the murder there had been a quarrel between the two. The professor’s sister, Miss Hunt, his wife, Astrid Allwyn, and a half dozen professors who were in the slain man s debt, are also suspected. Overman
approaches each secretly and offers to pin the guilt on another—for a fee. This complicates the case, and he finds himself the centre of intensive cross-fire. “MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.” Something of a mess one can get into is revealed in the new Paramount £pmedy, “Mind Your Own Business,” with Charlie Ruggles and Alice Brady, which begins to-day at the Regent. Ruggles is content to mind his own business of editing a nature column for a large newspaper, until his wife, played by Miss Brady, decides to mind his business for him. Then Ruggles begins to mind the business of everybody as editor of a scandal column. Things begin to happen which come near to not only losing his business for him, but his mind as well. It is a gay comedy of birds, bees, policemen, racketeers, politicians, newspapermen and Boy Scouts, which includes in its cast Lyle Talbot, Jack La Rue, Bennie Baker, Frankie Darro, and a host of other feature players. WORLD FAMOUS PIANIST. “One is never too old to begin a new experiment if one has the physical strength for it. Age is a condition of the mind, and has nothing to do with actual years.” Thus spoke Paderewski during a wait between shots of Lothar Mendes’ production, “Moonlight Sonata,” which comes to the Regent on Saturday. Asked if he would make another film, Paderew’ski replied: "I have not the slightest intention of doing so, but age should teach us never to make rash statements—or to prophecy too much.” The maestro showed no signs of temperament, and to everybody was charmingly courteous. \ WEST COASTERS’ DANCE. On Saturday next, Colin Campbell, with his famous Band are running a special West Coasters’ Broadcast Carnival, in the Ritz Assembly Hall, Christchurch. This is being run to cater for the West Coasters who will be visiting Christchurch for the Can-terbury-West Coast football match. All sorts of novelties, Monte Carlo, Lucky Spots, etc. Arrangements have been made with 3YA to broadcast the programme. RUNANGA FANCY DRESS BALL.
A function that is creating a great deal of attention is the Runanga School Children’s plain and fancy dress ball, which will be held on Friday next, September 17, in the Miners’ Hall, Runanga. The committee have excellent arrangements in hand and valuable prizes are being offered. The Gaiety 7 Orchestra will provide the music.
