TASMAN RACE

[Aust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] SYDNEY, August 28.

Prior to sailing yesterday, Captain Davey said he was not officially informed of the proposed five hours’ delay in the Awatea’s departure from Auckland next Friday, but he would welcome it, because it would put the vessel on her mettle, and give her an opportunity of showing her prowess. Captain Davey emphasised there would be no speeding if the weather were rough. The “Herald” says: “If there is a race between the Awatea and Mariposa, it will be watched with the keenest interest, not only on both sides of the Tasman, but in Britain and America, as it will become something more than a race between two rival liners—it will be an international match, with the prestige of two great maritime nations at stake.”
