WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent!

Progress League:

WESTPORT, August 29.

Mr J. C. Brown was in the chair at the usual monthly meeting of the Progress League, held last evening. Mr L. Buchanan, a representative of the South Island Travel Association, waited on the League, asking for support for a proposed illustrated booklet of tourist attractions of the South Island. Full details of the proposal were given by Mr Buchanan, who stressed the value of a good publicity scheme for the whole of the South Island, compared with solely local scnemes. He suggested that the Borough and County Councils might be asked to assist towards the cost of the booklet, which was estimated at £1,600. Every district would receive equal treatment, but the speaker was of the opinion the Buller had more to offer tourists than Canterbury. i It was agreed that the Chairman interview the Mayor and County Chairman in connection with the proposal. Mr Wilson, on behalf of a special committee, submitted a report on the harbour.

A suggestion was made that a deputation visit Wellington and place the whole matter before Cabinet, but action was deferred until a further committee meeting was held. Mr H. R. Young was appointed a member of the League. The Chairman suggested that the Department be asked to relay the rails from Cape Foulwind to the lime works. Lime would thus be made available to farmers at a much cheaper rate than formerly, and with a South Island market, the freight would provide big revenue. It was left to the Chairman to approach the authorities in connection with the proposal. Personal:
