YESTERDAY’S GAMES Marist’s Narrow Win Yesterday’s Rugby League matches were played under ideal ..conditions. In the only senior game, Marist narrowly defeated Ngahere at Ngahere by 21 points to 13 after a keenlyfought game. More than half of Marist’s team comprised junior players, who performed creditably to secure a win. Scorers for Marist were S. Knapp (2), M. Morel (2), P. O’Brien, while D. Greaney converted three tries. Ngahere’s points were secured by J. Weir, who was responsible for two tries, a potted goal, and one converversion, and P. Mulcare, who scored one try. Mr M. O’Brien refereed. Kumara Win Knockout BRUNNER BEATEN 12—0. Under ideal conditions the final of the Junior Knock Out competition was played at Wingham - Park yesterday afternoon, Kumara maintaining their season's record by defeating Brunner by 12 points- to nil. The game, whilst not quite up to the expected standard of bright football, proved to be a keen and interesting tussle, with Kumara having an advantage territorially 7. Not till the second spell did the Kumara backs throw the ball about in their customary manner, play up to that point being confined more to the forwards. J. Keating opened Kumara’s first scoring movement sending Rochford away. Featherstone who secured cut in well and sent M. McGrath over for a try, Keating failed with the kick. From a scrum inside Brunner’s 25 the ball came to B. Rochford who sent on to McGill to Keating for M. McGrath to secure his second try. Keating again failed to goal and half-time - sounded with the scores Kumara 6 Brunner 0. Bad handling by the Brunner backs spoiled several chances early in the second spell. Lee (Brunner) and C. McLean (Kumara) each failed-with penalty kicks. W. Bell sent M. McGrath away, and the latter passed to Keating who handed on to C. Goad who scored. Keating missed the kick. From a scrum near the line the ball came quickly to J. McGrath who cut in splendidly to score well out. McLean failed with the kick and full time was called with the scores Kumara 12 Brunner 0. Mr. J. Griffen refereed. Early in the second spell Kumara lost Featherstone who received a kick in the leg, and shortly ' afterwards J. Rochford also retired with a leg injury. Third Grade MARIST 8, RUNANGA 3. After leading at half time by 3 points to nil, Runanga failed to hold Marist in a bright and interesting game at Wingham Park. The final sconce was Marist 8 Runanga 3. For Marist McGirr scored and L. Beben converted while Zampese also scored a try. Clay scored for Runanga. Mr. A. Fielding refereed. FOURTH GRADE. Runanga fourths failed to field a team against Marist in their fixture ture set down for decision at Wingham Park yesterday. The game was the final for the Challenge Shield. BLACKBALL BEAT SYDENHAM. CHRISTCHURCH, August 28. The West Coast senior champions Blackball defeated Sydenham by 13 points to 7 at Spreydon Park this afternoon. Blackball set up a forward rush that looked dangerous, but off-side play spoilt their advantage. Dodds broke away and passed to Pascoe, who however, was off side. Sydenham forwards rushed play to Blackball territory, where off-side play gave Rastrick the opportunity of kicking a splendid goal. Sydenham 2, Blackball 0. I. Wilson ran the

length of the field with the ball, almost scoring. Thompson kicked well down, and following up fast he beat Mountford for the ball and scored. Rastrick goaled Sydenham 7, Blackball 0. Perrin, Driscol, and Bruce were associated in a good forward movement, a force down saving Sydenham. O’Driscon followed up a high kick and scored for Blackball. Dodds goaled. Half time came with the score Sydenham 7, Blackball 5. At the start of the second spell. Blackball attacked vigorously, Dodds, Pascoe and McNaughton being responsible for a good passing rush. Mountford, at full-back, was playing a sound game, defending well and breaking through the Sydenham forwards. Blackball backs were throwing the ball about, but offside play spoilt many of their movements. A pretty passing rush by Dodds J. Clark, Pascoe and W. Clark ended in W. Clark scoring. Dodds goaled. Blackball 10, Sydenham 7. Pascoe started another rush, which ended in W. Clark scoring his second try. Dodds failed- to goal. Blackball 13, Sydenham 7. Kirk picked up the ball and ran through to score an I easy try. Dodds goaled. Blackball 1 were attacking when the game ended: Blackball 18, Sydenham 7. Referee: Mr. W. Thompson. BLACKBALL’S SECOND SUCCESS.

Playing at Monica Park, Christchurch, Saturday afternoon, before a large attendance, the Blackball senior League team defeated Hornby by 14 points to 8 after a hard game. For Blackball, tries were scored by Perrin, McNaughton and Roberts (2). NORMAN COX CUP. Challenging for the Norman Cox Cup, the West Coast schoolboy representative’s were in great form to defeat Canterbury by 42 points to 3.
