Opera House
“LIBELLED LADY’’ Four outstanding stars glitter in the new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer hit, “Libelled Lady,” now screening at the Opera House. Jean Harlow, William Powell, Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracy unite in this great drama with a newspaper angle that' is as eyecatching and modern as the current headlines of the front page. The film centres about a society girl who considers a newspaper has insulted her and files a damage suit for five million dollars. The newspaper is thrown into an uproar and its editor solicits the aid of a former star reporter to extricate the paper. To make the heiress drop her suit the reporter makes her fall in love with him. When he, in turn, falls in love with her, complications begin. Jean Harlow, as the editor’s sweetheart who helps tangle things up for everyone, has her most amusing role. Powell, the romantic reporter, gives vigour, humour and punch to his part. Miss Loy is delightful as the libelled lady. Spencer Tracy completes the foursome with another virile and natural portrayals as the harassed editor. Not to be overlooked is Walter Connolly as Miss Loy’s millionaire father who has a penchant for trout fishing. The story moves at lightning pace. The dialogue is constantly entertaining. The direction of Jack Conway js top-notch. “THE CASE OF THE VELVET CLAWS."
