FROM THE BALKANS
A short but ponderous figure visited a State Placement Office a few days ago, and before he lett he had set the officials one of the hardest tasks in their experience. The visitor’s age is 64. his height is sft. sin., and he is over 17 stone in weight. Born at Salonika, the principal Aegean sea-port of the Balkan Peninsula, he has lived in many countries, and claims to be able to speak and write in French, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Roumanian. Turkish and Zulu, as well as in English. He also stated that for seven years he was one of the United States Government’s official interpreters. The wheels of the Service have, of course, been put in motion on his behalf, but it is hoped that someone in need of an interpreter will communicate with the Placement Office.
