SMALL LEAD Over United Services (From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association with the team.) PORTSMOUTH, August 18. The New Zealanders, rollowing the exacting Test, proceeded to the less serious engagement with the United Services. 'There were 2,000 present. The weather was fine and the wicket good. Cowie and Robert made a sensational start, dismissing Commander Shaw and Captain urove in three overs, for one run. The wicket was a little lively from overnight moisture, resulting in Cowie being troublesome. His first two victims cost ten runs. Weir also had a successful period before lunch on the drying pitch. His figures were nine overs, five maidens, eleven runs, two wickets. The Services collapsed before lunch. Six wickets were down for 70. Flying Officer Musson and Lieutenant Borgnis, the navy all-rounder, were the only batsmen to show confidence, but both were uneasy facing Cowie. Borgnis was associated with Lieutenant Martin in a lively eighth wicket partnership, whicn yielded 51 runs in forty minutes. Borgnis hit Vivian for a six, four and two in one over, reaching the century in a hundred minutes. New Zealand made a disastrous start against the steady Services’ attack, with Borgnis handling the fast bowling, and Robins, a brother of England’s skipper, bowling spinners. They lost Kerr and Carson with the score at 40, until Vivian and Donnelly in a bright partnership added 68. Vivian was unlucky to be dismissed through a misunderstanding with Lowry. Vivian hit six fours. Scores were:—

Macartney, in the “Herald,” commenting on the Tests between England and New Zealand, says: Seeing that England in all three Tests was the superior side in skill and experience, New Zealand emerged from them satisfactorily, whereas the performances by the English players were not convincing, blew Zealand showed courage and spirit in the Tests, more, in fact, than in many county games. The performances by individuals in all departments were praiseworthy, considering their experienced opponents.
