JEHOVAITE
SUES INSPECTOR. SYDNEY, August 14. “Jehovaites” will figure in an action for alleged assault and slander that one of their number is bringing against Police Inspector Patrick Joseph Seery, of Tam worth. This was revealed before Mr Act-ing-Justice Owen in chambers yesterday, when it was stated that Inspector Seery was being sued by one Newman, a member of a religious order. The action arises out of police action taken when Newman was in control of certain broadcasting of Judge Rutherford’s speech on Jehovaites. Yesterday Seery asked that the action should be heard in Tamworth on September 28th next. He claimed that this would save expense and was more convenient, as he wished to-call a number of witnesses who reside in Tamworth. Plaintiff opposed the application on the ground that he would be prejudiced by a trial at Tamworth, inasmuch as a local newspaper there had published an account of the gaoling of certain Jehovaites in Germany. His Honor granted the change of venue, and also allowed Seery to file a plea of not guilty in the action. Mr W. F. Sheahan (instructed by Mr R. J. O’Halloran) appeared for Wallace (by Mr Hayes) for Newman.
