When Jie stowed away on the Tamaroa, at Wellington, on June 21st, and hid behind the boilers, Montague Assender, farm worker, 24, thought he was going to see his parents in England, but although he reported to the captain, the first night out, and worked well on the voyage, he was put off at Balboa, and kept in prison from July 10th to July 24th, until he was placed aboard the Mataroa, which returned to Auckland on Saturday. Before Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., today, Assender pleaded guilty to stowing away. The police said that Assander had worked well on both vesIn a statement, Assender said that he had been unable to obtain farm work, and, having no friends in New Zealand, he decided to stow away. The Magistrate remanded him until Monday next, for sentence, full inquiries to be made meanwhile. SUSTENANCE FRAUD. WHARGAREI, August 26. Henry James McNaughton, Onerahi, farmer, was fined £2 10s by Mr. G. N. Morris, at the Police Court, on a charge that being in receipt of relief payments, he submitted a false statement of property earnings, thereby obtaining £lO 4s 7d, to which he was not entitled.
