WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] Hospital Radio Fund: WESTPORT, August 11. Mr. G. Blair, was in the chair at a meeting of the Hospital Radio Fund Committee held last evening. Others present were Messrs F. Slee, M. Head, A. Atkin, R. Higman and W. Atkin (Secretary). Plans for the installation of radio sets in the various institutions in Westport were considered and it was decided that 60 beds in the Buller Hospital be fitted with ear phones or pillow phones which ever will be the most suitable. Separate Radio sets will be provided for the men’s and women’s wards, with additional loud speakers for the convalescent wards, also a broadcast set for the children’s ward, while arrangements will be maae to equip the Nurses’ Home, Old People’s Flome, O’Connor Home and Kawatiri Hospital with radio sets fitted with extensions to suit the -different wards. Further plans for raising money were discussed and a most at- 1 tractive programme of entertainments was drawn up. A concert, and community sing is to be held in St. James' Theatre on Sunuay, August 22nd. The committee expressed its satisfaction with the line.response to the appeal and with the support given to the various functions held in aid of the fund. Card Party: The big part played by the Labour functions in the social life of Westport was again shown last evening when the local branch or the Party held its weekly Card Tournament. The rooms were filled to capacity and a very happy time was spent. The ladies’ social committee provided an excellent supper and in other ways catered for their patrons’ enjoyment. Miss Ruby Anderson captured the Euchre prize, with Mr. F. Todd and Mr. F. Higgins in second and third positions respectively. The FortyFives’ ' Competition was won by Mr. Perkins.

Plunket Society: Miss Harkness was in the chair at the monthly meeting ot the local branch of the Plunket Society held at the Rest Rooms. A vote of sympathy was accorded Mrs. Levestam in the death of her father. Mrs. W. Smith was welcomed to the meeting. The Nurse’s report was read and adopted. A cheque for £lO from the Relief Fund for assistance to deserving cases associated with Plunket work, was received with thanks. The Secretary was instructed to write the Westport Coal Company asking for a donation of coal to the Women’s Rest Room. It was decided to purchase a new bicycle for the Nurse immediately and to organise a function to defray the cost. Miss Harkness was thanked for a report on the business dealt with at the recent Provincial Conference held at- Christchurch.

Shipping : The Kalingo sailed yesterday for Lyttelton and the Kartigi this morning for Auckland. The Wingatui is due here to-morrow. The Kekerangu, Kaiwarra and Kaimai are aue at Westport on Friday.
