N.Z. HONEY BLENDING
DANGER TO EXPORT High Commissioner’s Warning I Per Press Association], CHRISTCHURCH, August 9. Emphatic views about the danger of the blending of New Zealand export honey with any outside product are voiced by the New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr W. J. Jordan, in a letter, written to Mr W. B. Bray, of Christchurch. Mr Jordan’s views are interesting, in view of the recent controversy which has taken place over the allegations of blending that have been made against the New Zealand Honev Control Board. “The honey situation has been the subject of some inquiry in London,” Mr Jordan’s letter states, .“and you probably know that it has been decided to suspend operations here, on account of the shortage. It was decided that we should not use any honey other than New Zealand honey, and, as that is not available in sufficient quantity to meet the demand, we prefer to forego sales altogether, rather than damage our reputation by selling blended honey. If once ‘lmperial Bee’ was associated with a blend, we should never be able to redeem our guarantee that it was pure New Zealand honey. We have read of the shortage in New Zealand, and it was suggested that imported honey be sold there. I have very decided ideas about that matter; but that does not come under the influence of the High Commissioner in London —at least not at present.”
“HALF-PIE” HONEY.” ENGLISH ADULTERATION. LONDON, August 8. Legislation is proposed to prevent the deceptive use of honey. Substitutes at present are actually exceeding the sales of the genuine product in\Britain, labelled “prepared honey.” These are largely glucose and sold in sixpenny jars, not containing a halfpennyworth of pure honey. Dominion Governments support the British Beekeepers’ Association in the claim for legal protection for the word honey.
