Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth, yesterday, Archibald Foster was fined 10s, with 10s costs, for driving a motor vehicle without a license.

The Public Works Department continues to receive applications from motorists anxious to cross the Lewis Pass by the new highway, but. motorists are receiving no encouragement .to make the trip, as the road is not yet in a fit state to be used and in bad weather might be very dangerous. Anyone who makes the journey did so entirely at his own risk.

During an inspectiion by the Inspector of Machinery (Mr. McClennan) over the week-end, a defective plate in the mine boiler was discovered at the Wallsend Mine which, in consequence, was idle yesterday. The mine will be idle again to-day, and it is quite possible that no work will be commenced before next week.

Precautions against night prowlers are evidently necessary in Greymouth. The other a considerable quantity of fooclstuffs and other articles was stolen from the basement of a house in spite of the proximity of a street light. Other cases of theft are also reported, so that residents should be on guard against further depredations.
Leaving Wellington at 8.10 a.m. and stopping at Blenheim, a MilesWhitney Strait ’plane, owned and piloted by Mr. H. Edwards, building contractor, of Wellington, arrived at Greymouth at 11 a.m. yesterday. Mr. J. D. McMillan, of the head office staff of J. R. McKenzie, Ltd.; was a passenger by the ’plane, on a business visit. The 'plane left on return to Wellington at 12,50 p.m.
