WORKERS’ HOUSES
Loans Proposal AUCKLAND COUNCIL. AUCKLAND, August 8. A recommendation that the City Council call tenders for the erection of 34 workers’ dwellings for letting purposes on council property in Grey Lynn, Ponsonby and Morningside was made by the Property Committee at a meeting of the council. The committee proposed that 24 of the dwellings be erected in Garnet Road, Grey Lynn, two in TrinityStreet, Ponsonby, and eight in Walmer Road, Morningside. The committee made a provision that in no case should any tenderer be given contracts for the erection of more than two dwellings. It was recommended further that the Finance Committee be requested to apply for a housing loan of £30,060 under the State Advances Corporation Act, 1936. to cover the cost of the work, the loan to be for 30 years at 3 per cent. Other recommendations of the committee were that the city engineer, Mr J. Tyler, be requested to prepare plans and specifications of dwellings which could be erected at a cost of approximately £BOO each. Hon. F. E. Lark, M.L.C., moved that the matter be referred back to the committee. The council’s housing survey was now under way and the council should not proceed with building schemes piecemeal. Miss E. Melville said she thought the Garnet Road sites were too far away from the city and that the council would be better advised to buy up some of the fine slopes nearer the business area. Hon. T. Bloodworth, M.L.C., said the scheme had been under way for a long time and there was no reason why the matter should be referred back. The matter was referred back to the committee.
