FASTER PROGRESS
SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK RAILWAYS. I Per Press Association], ■ CHRISTCHURCH, August 6. Entering the second year of activity since its resumption by the present Government, work on the construction of the South Island Main Trunk Railway, northwards from Parnassus, has reached a stage .at which progress is becoming steadily more pronounced, and within two months the line itself will begin to take shape. . It is expected that the spanning of the Leader River with a steel and concrete bridge will be completed about the end of September, and at that time it is intended to commence laying plates for the first section of the extension. Material for fifteen miles of the permanent way has arrived at 'Parnassus, and it •is considered likely that in a little more than 12 months the line will be opened as far north as Hundalee for the transport of all forms of traffic. The railhead will then be within 22 miles of Kaikoura.
