REEFTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] REEFTON, August 6. Mr J. Cunninghame, a resident of the Grey Road, was taken to the hospital yesterday afternoon, having been found seriously ill at his residence. A resident of Reefton, known as “Buck” Walker, has started a wrestling class at Reefton, and is being, patronised by quite a number of, young men. He is giving lessons without any charge and invites spectators to be present. Mr Walker recently won the West Coast middleweight, championship at Greymouth, and also a contest at Westport. At the Magistrate's Court to-day before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., the following civil cases were dealt with: T. A. Dellaca v. Allan Burley, judgment was for plaintiff by default for £2 9s and costs £1 5s 6d. S. R. Bannan v. C. O’Regan, judgment for £lO 18s Id varied, to be paid by instalments of £1 per month, first payment by September 10. P. H. Martin v. R. Pope, judgment summons for £2.3 5s 6d. Defendant was ordered to pay £23 5s 6d together with solicitor’s fee £1 Ils 6d forthwith, in default 25 days’ imprisonment in Paparua Prison. Warrant not to issue on payment of £5 per month, first payment by ■lO/9/37. On the information of the police, Harry Clark was charged with (1) procuring possession of a firearm without a permit, and (2) delivering possession of a firearm to a person not authorised to receive the same. He was fined £1 and 10s costs on the first charge, and ordered to pay 10s costs on the second. For permitting cattle to wander on the road, Martha Cuff and Norman H. Winstanley were each fined £1 and costs 12s. Richard Saundry Leggoe was charged with failing to give way at an intersection when driving a motor car. Sergeant Hodgins conducted the prosecution. Mr J. K. Patterson represented the defendant, who 'Entered a plea of not guilty. After hearing* several witnesses, the Magistrate reserved his decision until after he had had a view of the locality. The licensee of the Criterion Hotel, Reefton, was fined £2 with in- costs on a charge of selling liquor- after hours, two other charges arising out of the same set of circumstances being withdrawn. For being found on licensed premises, two men were fined 5s with 10s costs, and one man 5s with £1 3s 6d costs.

Applications granted at a sitting of the Warden’s Court by Mr Raymond Ferner, Warden, were as follows: J. E. Reiha and A. Smith, ordinary prospecting license over 40 acres in Blk. 111, Mawheraiti S.D.; Consolidated Goldfields, two ordinary prospecting licenses each 100 acres, situate in Blk. 11, Waitahu S.D.; W. T. Strand, two ordinary prospecting licenses, one over 80 acres 2 roods 12 perches, in Blk. XIV, Reefton S.D., and the other over 100 acres in Blk. 11, Waitahu S.D. (subject to gazetted conditions in respect of the land affected); T. McDonnell, special site license over 1 acpe in Blk. 11, Waitahu S.D.; W. T. Strand, prospecting license over 100 acres in Blk. XIV, Reefton S.D. The following applications were withdrawn: N.Z. Prospecting and Mining, Ltd., six ordinary prospecting licenses covering an aggregate of 600 acres, all in Blk. X, Reefton S.D. (two objected to by W. J. Morris); C. M. Morris for three special quartz claim licenses situate in Elks. 11, Waitahu S.D., and XIV, Reef ton S.D.; W. S. Clark, for a certificate of protection over a special quartz claim. Snowy River Sluicing Company’s application for renewal of a water-race license was adjourned sine die pending production of title, when a grant for 12 months will be made. Rimu Gold Dredging Co’s, application to surrender portion of special dredging claim held under License No. 8523 was adjourned sine die for amended description of survey to be filed.
