CIVIC BAND
SUCCESSFUL CONCERT. A large audience greeted the Greymouth Civic Band in the Town Hall last evening, when they presented their second Members’ Concert of the 1937 season, and the support that was accorded them was fully justified. for seldom has a more popular concert been given by a local combination of musicians. The Band showed the results of assiduous training under their capable conductor, Mr. Ernest Barton, and it is no idle boast to say that the Band improves with each public appearance. The vocal part of the programme was in the hands of Mrs. W. Cogswell, Miss Doreen Donovan, Master Ronald Lewis. Mr. F. Smith and Mr. C. H. Tylee-Porter, and a very suitable combination it proved to be. mrs. Cogswell’s voice was ideally suited in “Like to the Damask Rose,” and she was compelled to give an encore. Master Ronald Lewis, boy soprano, with his sweet voice delighted the audience with the singing of “Indian Love Call,” "Silent Night,” “The Rosary” and “Rainbow on the River.” This lad possesses exceptional ability, and shows great promise as a singer. Mr. Tylee-Porter, who has a bass voice of fine quality, used it to advantage in his bracketed number, “The Song of Hybrias the Cretan,” and “The Lute Player.” He had to respond to a well deserved encore. Miss Miriam Trott gave an excellent performance in her specialty tap dance, showing great skill, and was heartily encored. Miss Doreen Donovan was in excellent voice and gave a sympathetic rendering of “My Heart is Weary,” and had to respond to an encore. Mr. Fred Smith’s tenor voice was heard to distinct advantage in “Angels Guard Thee,” the violin obligato played by Miss M. Coburn contributing lo make an artistic performance. Mr. Smith was greeted with enthusiasm and had to respond to an encore. Bandsman G. Simons gave a tuneful rendering of a trombone solo, “Trumpeter,” while a cornet duet given by Bandsmen W. Jones and F. Greig met with spontaneous applause as did Bandsmen W. Tones’ cornet solo, “Hailstorm Polka.” Prior to the concluding item, Mr. A. C. Kilpatrick, the President, thanked the audience for the wonderful support given the Band, and the assisting artists for their excellent performances which all so much enjoyed. The accompanistes for the evening were Mrs. King, Misses M. McSherry, L.T.C.L., V. Millar, A.T.C.L., and N. Harrie, A.T.C.L.
