ENGLISH SUMMER
HEAT AND HOLIDAYS. [British Official Wireless]. RUGBY, August 3. Summer weather during the weekend extending over practically the whole of the British Isles, helped considerably towards giving the population one of the most satisfactory Bank Holidays for some years. AIL the seaside resorts were crowded and seasonable sporting events had record attendances. The railways had unusually heavy holiday bookings, and last night cars returning to London were passing points on the main roads at the rate of 3,500 an hour. The Automobile Association reports that, considering the extent of the road traffic, very few accidents occurred, and these were cf a minor character. The standard of driving showed a definite improvement on that set at previous holiday times. The King and Queen spent the week-end at Windsor Castle. Yesterday 12,000 persons passed through the State apartments. The warm weather promises to continue. The Cowes Regatta opened today, and was attended by a phenomenal number of small craft—an indication of the revived popularity of sailing during the last few days. The temperature in London, to-day was 80 degrees, as against 74 degrees yesterday. The monthly review published by the Midland Bank contains an article analysing holiday expenditure. The writer estimates that about 20,000,000 persons in Britain take an annual holiday of a week’s duration. He calculates the amount spent at £30,000,000 at least. An interesting point made in the article is that under collective agreements or' other arrangements nearly 2,000,000 working people receive a week’s holiday, with pay.
