OBITUARY

MRS. AMELIA STEEL. The news of the sudden death at her residence, Boundary Street, yesterday morning, of Mrs. Amelia Steel, wife of James Steel, Proprietor of the Golden Eagle Hotel, will be received with regret by a wide circle of friends. Deceased was a nalive of Ross, and 64 years of age, being a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Gardiner. She had resided in Kumara for the greater part of her life, and her home had been in Greymouth for the past 14 years. Besides her husband she is survived by four sons. Hugh (Christchurch), John —a former well-known New Zealand Rugby representative— (Governor’s Bay), James (Greymouth), and Harold (Hokitika); also, two sisters, Mrs. John Stewart (Kumara) and Mrs. T. Coyle (Hokitika), and two brothers, Messrs Archibald and Harold Gardiner (South Westland). The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon, leaving deceased’s late residence at 2.30 o’clock, for Holy Trinity Church, and thence for the Karoro Cemetery. MR. GEORGE BURGER. After a lengthy illness, Mr. George Burger, Proprietor of the Paroa Hotel, passed away at his residence yesterday morning. The late Mr. Burger was a native of Maori Creek, where he was born 62 years ago. He was a storekeeper in Kumara for many years, and ten years ago purchased the license of the Paroa Hotel During his residence in Kumara, hd was a member of the Kumara Bor-* ough Council and of the Kumara Racing Club, in addition to being a member of the Druids’ Lodge and a Past Arch. He is survived by his wife, one son, Leo, and two daughters, Misses Ita and Patricia Burger (all of Paroa); also two brothers, Very Rev. Father A. L. Burger, S.M (Rector of St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream), and Herman (Dannevirke), and four sisters, Mesdames T, Kean (Christchurch), J. Anderson (Invercargill), D. O’Grady (Waimate) and Miss M. Burger (Christchurch). The funeral will take place this afternoon, leaving St. Patrick’s Church at 2 o’clock for the Karoro Cemetery. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 9.30 a.m. Very Rev. Father Burger will arrive by aeroplane from Wellington this morning.
