’ AUCKLAND RACES Lord Vai Hurdles Fancy SCOTLAND IN CORNWALL. The Auckland Racing Club’s Great Northern fixture will open to-day, and the main interest will be the decision of the Great Northern Hurdles and the Cornwall Handicap. Lord Vai is leniently treated and is an outstanding lightweight possibility. Jolly Beggar is a brilliant hurdler but two other lightweights in Black Marlin and Tout le Monde are preferred, to him. Black Marlin is. however, a doubtful starter. It is not a strong field, and in view of Jolly Beggar’s big impost any runner may spring a .surprise. Scotland has undergone a special preparation for the Cornwall Handicap. Gay Rose has recently been in winning vein, Royal Appellant is always a dangerous opponent and is handily weighted. He has also undergone a special preparation for this race. In view of recent form Horowhenua and Valmint, confirmed mudlarks, cannot be passed over in sorting this smart field out. The single pool system of betting will operate. The track will be very heavy. The fields and prospects
