Outsiders 1st and 2nd

(Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn). LONDON. June 2. For (he Derby there was bright, sunny weather, and th e track was hard. An immense crowd was present. Gypsies were as numerous as ever. However it was noticed that costers’ carts and horse-brakes ar ( e disappearing, being replaced by charabancs and motor caravans. The King and Queen had a great welcom e from a crowd estimated at 250,000, when they drove on to Epsom Downs in the afternoon, and, together with other members of the Royal Family, in th e Royal box, watched the race which resulted as follows:— Derby Stakes, of 100 sovs. each and 3000 sovs. added; second horse 10 percent.. and third horse 5 per eent. whole stakes; breeder of winner 500 sovs. out of stake. About one mile and a-half: — Mrs G. B. Miller’s b.e. Midday Sun by Solario —Bridg e of Allan (M. Bearv) 1. t Mrs F. Nagle’s b.e. Sandsprite by Sandwich —Wood Nymph 2. 11,11. Aga Khan’s b.e. le Grand Due by Blenheim—La Douarviore (C-, Smike) 3. Twenty-on e started. Won by a length and a-half, with the same distnace between second and third. After many delays at the start, there was ulimately a perfect dispatch. Renardo led for half a mile, with Fairford and Goya IL, prominent. Fairford was in front at Tattenham Corner, with Goya 11. handy. Cashbook was improving his position rapidly. Goya 11. was ahead at the three furlongs, with le Grand Due coming up. Cashbook was buffeted, and fell back. Perifox temporarily appeared likely to take part in the finish. Then Midday Sun, with a dazzling run', wore down the blanketed bunch of seven horses, and stood off Sandsprite’s challenge. De Grand Due though he had the rails running, was unabl e to make any impression on the two outsiders. The winner’s owner, Mrs Miller, is the first woman to wi;j the Derby at Epsom, and she was congratulated by Their Majesties. This is the first time that women owners have been first and second.

The King gave a dinner party to members of th e Jockey Club, at Buckingham Palace to-night. Her sex debarred Mrs Miller from tasting the highest honour as owner of the Derby winner. She did not attend the King’s dinner because, traditionally, it is for men only, and she did not hear the King propose her health, which the Jockey Club members drank with the heartiest goodwill. However. Mrs Miller says that she will never forget the invitation to the Royal box after the race, where sh e was congratulated by Their Majesties on the success of Midday Sun. * The win was a turning point for the jockey. Michael Beary, who is fighting hard to re-establish himself, since a receiving order was made against him in December. His reward as h e dismounted was a kiss from his bride, whom he married six weeks ago. Midday Sun is trained by F. S. Butters (not the Aga Khan’s trainer). The colt previously won the Free Handicap at Newmrirket and ran third to Le Ksar and Goya 11. in the Two Thousand 'Guineas. ASHBURTON T-O- ACCEPTANCES(Per Press Association).
