(Our Own Correspondent). Personal: WESTPORT, June 3. At the Borough Council meeting, 'held lasi, evening, a motion of eondofenee was accorded the relatives of the late Mi' J. McKendry, who had’ been in the employ of the Council for 36 years. All Councillors stood in silence as a mark of respect. Mr ,J. Hutt, Birchfield, left to-day for Christchurch to attend the Poultiy Show. ISympatliy with the relatives of Mr A. Burt, lion. Secretary of the Buller Football Association, was expressed at a meeting of the. Management Commit, tee of the Canterbury Football Association. Guests at the Hotel Buller are: Mr' and (Mrs E Watt (Roxburgh), Miss. K. Carter (Greymouth), Mr M. Somerville (England), Mr A;'Shaw, Mr J. Franklin, Mr J. R. Scott (Nelson), Mr M. Shipping; The Omana is duo here to-night, and the Kaimai to-morrow. The Kartigi leaves Auckland to-night for Westport. 'The Rata and Canopus are due to. morrow, and the Titoki and Poolta at the week-end. There were no shipping movements yesterday.

Licensing (Jases: A ease against three Karamea residents, charged with being on a Westport hotel after hours, was dismissed. Ail three claimed they booked in at th’,, hotel on a Fr.day night, went u> the Reefton races on Saturday, and were leaving the hotel after calling for their bags and coa.ts when accosted by the police. A Westport publican, charged with three breaches of the Licensing Act, was convicted on tihe charge of selling, and fined £2 and costs, the other charges were withdrawn. Indecent Exposure:

Alexander Shaw pleaded guilty when charged in the Mag.stratc’o Court yesterday, with indecent exposure at the North Beach recently. Sergeant C. Ji King said accused had been collecting firewood on the day in question when a girl of D was engaged in a similar task nearby. The girl refused help when off ere d by udcused' but later she came over to him when he called her and it was then that the indecent exposure took place. Accused denied the charge at first, but later confessed. By pleading guilty he had saved the girl from giving evidence.

Mr Scully, for accused, attributed' t'.ie lapse to the effects of war wounds. Accused was lined .€lO, the Magistrate considering the offence a most serous one. If accu ed had been found guilty after defending, he would not have hesitated in sending him to Paparua Prison for three months. Three months were allowed in which to pay.

Westport Debating Society: “That Broadcasting Should be a State Monopoly,” was the subject of an interesting addre.-s at the fortnightly meeting of the Westport Debating Society, held last evening, in the Labour Rooms. Mr F. O’Gorm-in presided. Tne affirmative was taken by Miss Agnis. Costelloe (leader), Mes-ws T. Shaw, W. P. Jackson, and L. O’Neill; while the negative was supported' by Messrs 11. Maitland (leader). C. Robertson, M'ss O’Gormau, J. Johnston and C- Hansen. The discussion was interesting and animated, and at tli 0 conclusion, the chairman gave the speakers valuab-c advice on voice production. .‘That Trial bv Jury Should be Abolished,” will be’ the subject for the next debate.

for a 30 cwt. lorry for gas department. The matter of controlling milk supply in the town as requested by Westport United Dairies, Ltd., was held over. Taylor, from 2-1 applicants, was appointed, to t'he position of carpenter and handy-man. Mr M. O’Dea wrote, thanking the Council for giving him an opportunity of protesting against the Westport Dairies proposals, and referred to the service he had given for years. Mrs R. A. Adams wrote s miiarly and Mr A. Woodward waited on the Council in connection with the fame matter, and said he could see nothing beneficial in the bottling system when compared with can delivery.—The position is to be considered by a committee.
