The arrest of two thieves charged with stealing valuable jewellerly, also £4O in cash, has revealed |the existence ofl a highly-organised beggar underworld- The victims of the 'theft were a man and his wife, who supplementedl their comfortable pension by begging. Their practice was to dress in poor clothes,, drive in a luxury motor car to various villages, leave the car on the outskirts, and visit the houses, pleading they were in a state of starvation and had no homes- They bought' jewellery, a number of houses, and other possessions from their profits. The police also discovered a market, where “sltarving children” wer e hired to beggars at fees ranging from sixpence to two shillings daily.
