Tries to Run Man Down

(Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, June 3

A large sedan car, taken from the city last evening is believed to have been involved in a sensational incident at Brookby, at 1.30 this morning, when the driver of the ear, it is alleged, deliberately’ attempted to run down William Afoody, contractor, who discovered that 15 gallons of petrol had been drawn from a bowser at a gate leading to his property. Afoody’ was awakened by’ unusual sounds, and looking towards the gate, he saw a ear had turned round, and was coming back towards his property’. Noticing the hose of th e bowser pump had been cut through, Aloody stepped out in front of the ear, and held up his hand to signal the driver to stop. Afoody- alleged that th e driver switched off the headlight, speeded up, and drove straight at him. He had to jump out of the way’ to avoid being knocked down. Th e ear drove off at high speed. Afoody communicated with the police, and a constable followed the tracks. He found the car had hit a bank, but had been righted. The car was found this morning, damaged and abandoned in the city.
