A Wellington Press Assn, message states that yesterday Magistrate Mosley, holding there was a considerable element of skill in the: competition delivered reserved judgment in favour of th e defendant in a case brought by the police against Stewart John France, who tried a scheme he thought out, in connection with Wellington Rugby matches on April 17. The defendant showed he did very badly out of it, and was not likely to repeat his effort. He had £2O prizes and all -expenses to meet against a respons e of about. £5 to his circulars.

Th e Moana Women’s Institute 'held their monthly meeting in Moana schoolroom on Tuesday. Ther ; e was a record attendance of members and a happy afternoon was spent. A Press Assn, telegram states: Activity in the commercial area of Whangarei resulted in a sensational increase in building in the past, two months. Value of permits issued in April and May totalled £19,469, compared with £4679 in the corresponding months of 1936. The Kiwi Football Club’s Ball at Hokitika on Wednesday night was a great success. The large ■ gathering spent a niost enjoyable evening to the the music of the Rhythm Band. The West Coast Fox Trot competition was decided. Th e finalists were Mr Todd and Miss I. Neilson (winners), Messrs Stevens and partner and Munro and partner. Mr J. Haines, Greymouth, was judge.
