LORRY PINS MEN On Coalgate Road (Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, Jun e 2. " One man was killed instantaneously and another was injured, when .a motor lorry left the Coalgate-Sheffield road, five miles from Coalgate, and somersaulted over a steep bank, about 1.45 p.m. this afternoon. The man killed was George K. Crysell, married, aged 70, of Oust, who suffered terrible head injuries, including a fractured skull. The driver of the lorry, Arthur Reginald Forbes, married, also living at Oust, suffered wounds and abrasions to the head and body, but was not seriously hurt. Forbes, who was accompanied by Crysell, was driving the motor lorry along the road near the Bonanza Aline when, after turning a road bend, the lorry left the wheel tracks on the road. After recovering its position, it shot straight. across the other side of th e road, where it. somersaulted over a steep bank, coming to rest against a. wire fence about 12 feet below the oad. The driver of another lorry, who passed shortly afterwards, noticed the overturned vehicle, and hearing moans from beneath it, he quickly obtained the help of several miners to lift the overturned vehicle, under which the two men were pinned.

GRAVEL PIT TRAGEDY

Two Men Buried (Per Press Association). WHAKATANE, June 2. A shocking tragedy occurred at Alatata gravel pit, seventeen miles from Whakatane before noon to-day. Two men lost their lives. They were: DAN LEES, a County employee, single, aged 45. E. L. MASON, aged 30, a relief worker, married, with four children. They lost their lives as the result, of being buried in a slip. After smoko at 10 a.m.. a number of men ascended the hill to engage in stripping, while Lees and Mason remained in the pit to load a truck. When the men descended to the pit at lunch time, they discovered a slip had occurred, but there was no sign of their mates. They immediately communicated the fact to the township and the County office, and 20 men. working in a limited space, unearthed the bodies at about 2 p.m. Mason’s neck was broken. Lees had died, of suffocation. An inquest will b e held to-morrow.
