In Westport POLICE ACTIVITY. WESTPORT, .Tune 2. Arising ouf'bf a" complaint" by" A Councillor, at to-night’s meeting o f the Borough Council, in connection with damage caused to trees, 'the Mayor, Mjr J. Kilkenny, strongly criticising the police, said it would' be a great help to th G -Council if they would do something to prevent vandalism It seemed that all of the crime in P iller was expected to take place in Palmers, ton Street, because it was very rare to see the police in the residential area. He remarked: “If rhe Sergeant in charge would only harrass the wrongdoer to the Westport beautification scheme half as much as he does the ■unfortunate citizen who works all day and is unlucky enough to be caught m a hotel after hours, he would be doing a great job in the interests of the town.”
At the fortnightly fitting of the Magistrate’s Court, at Westport, a resident, formerly interested in the I--censed trad e was charged before Mr R. Ferner, S.M., with being on the premises of a country ‘hotel, after hours. Defendant said he had reason t 0 call on business. He was th e gjiest of the licensee. The. Magistrate asked Sergeant King the object of laying the information. The Sergeant replied that he had placed the facts before his superior officer, at Greymouth, who had instruc.'. ed the prosecution. The Magistrate: “Well, the inf or. mation is dismissed.” Nine (first offenders, found illegal.y on licensed premises, were fined 5s with 10s costs. The licensee, on a charge of aiding and abetting the of. fence was fined' 10s, with costs 10s. H. Samuels, for riding a cycle without a light, was ordered to pay costs J. W. Naylor was charged .with ruling a cycle without a light or a red reflector' and with not having a whi.e surface on the mudguard H e was ord. ered to pay costs on each information. amounting to thirty shillings. The Magistrate said he wished' to impress on citizens the importance of making themselves conversant with the new regulations. The toll of life on the highways made this necessary.
