LANCASHIRE LEAD
ON FIRST INNINGS 32 Ahead of N.Z. (Special to Press Association.) LONDON, Alay 31The New Zealanders bowled pertinaciously on a wicket as hard as a concitete road, but success depended too much on Cowie and Roberts- The former had another good day, never beiilg mastered- He opened, with nine overs, thre e maidens, sixteen runs, two iviekets, one being caught at square-leg,, and' the other! bowled with the next ball, besides having a catch dropped in the slips. Lancashire topped the century without further loss, but after lunch Tindill smartly stumped Paynter, and Wallace brilliantly ran out Oldfield. New Zealand then gained a grip on the game, five wickets falling in two hourls for 109. Roberts was rewarded for his strenuous striving with two wickets, another chance being missed in the 1 slips off him, Weir proved an effective changeHowever, Phillipson, who played really well, Duckworth, Pollard, and Wilkinson saved 'the County by determined batting, and 44 were added fon the last-wicket stand, which was broken only by a fine catch off his own bowling by Aloloney- Except for two dropped' catches, ( the fielding was generally clean, and sometimes brilliant, but slow bowling did not disturb the batsmen, and the bowling was almost wholly left to the faster menNew Zealand was again unable to get a good start Page, falling in the first over, snicking a bumper which he itrlied to hook- Hadlee and Moloney carefully played out timeThe attendance was 3000- Scores:— NEW ZEALAND—Ist Innings.
