(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, May 21. A fine of 10s with costs was imposed at the Magistrate’s Court on Jack Ross, whom a motorist ran down at th e Post Office corner, for a breach of traffic regulations in crossing the road (from the Post Office to Post Office Hotel corner) at an angle other than a right angle. A plea of guilty was entered by. his counsel, Mr Elcock. Charles W. Routledge was fined £1 on each of two charges, namely, driving a motor vehicle without reasonable consideration for other persons using the street and failing to report an accident involving injury to a pedestrian caused by a car driven by him. Mr James, for defendant, pleaded guilty. Sergeant Gilligan said defendant had failed to keep a promise to come to the Police Station and make a statement. Mr James said the police statement was not entirely correct since 'the ac_ cident occurred in the centre of the .road at an intersection. He submitted that a conviction without penalty would be justified sice it was not a serious offence. The Magistrate said it was questionable whether any offence had been made out. The fact that defendat’s car was equipped with celluloid screens which might impair visibility should make the driver especially careful. A fine o £2 with costs was imposed on John Brake for failure to keep motor delivery van as far as was practicable to his left of the roadway at Arthur’s Pass. Defendant forwarded a letter pleading guilty and requesting that no witnesses be called. Sergeant Gilligan stated Peter Tinetti a farmer, was driving a small car which was involved in a head-on collision with th e defendant’s van. Defendant, in his letter, stated that as there were women passengers in the smaller car he had only two courses open, either a side on collision which might havei overturned the smaller car or a head on collision. The width of the road at th e point was 12 feet. Eight persons were fined 5s and costs for licensing law breaches. Mr Charles Henry North, formerly of (*reywouth, died to-day af|ty?r a brief illness at the age of 69 years. Deceased, who was a native of Hokitika, camo here to reside four years ago on his retirement from the Railwal service, in which he had been machinist at Greymouth and Dunedin. He was in former a well-known rifle shot, being a member of the old Grey Rifles. H e was of a quiet disposition and leaves many friends on the. West Coast. H e leaves a widow, a brother (Mr Sydney North of Greymouth) and one sister (Mrs J. Taylor of Auckland). At Kokatahi sale yards on Wednesday W. Jeffries and Co. disposed of the following live stock: For T. J. Meharry 1 fat heifer £6 12s fid, 1 bullock £7 12s fid. 2 at £5 15s. 1 Jersey steer £5 7s 6d, 2 runners at £5 2s fid, 1 at £5 10s; for M. Wallace 1 <*ow at £2 12s fid; for B. O’Brien, 1 cow at £2 ss. Two good lines of full mouth breeding ewes were sold as follows: 80 Romney cross at 26s 3d, 75 at 30s. Airtravel (N.Z.) Ltd. has ordered for its South Westland service a de Havilland Dragonfly plane, the first of the type, in New Zealand, a twinengined bi-plane, similar to the de Havilland Dragon Rapides used by Cook Strait Airways, only slightly smaller. Th e engines are four cylinder Gipsy Majors of 130 horse-power, giving a top speed of 147 miles an hour, and a cruising speed of about 125 miles an hour. The cruising range with normal fuel load is 885 miles. The aeroplane will hold its he'ght with one engine running. The cabin has two seats side-by-side in the nose, with dual controls, a single seat behind, and a seat across the back of the cab'n. It is possible for short flights to fit an extra movable seat alongside the single seat, thus giving accommodation for a pilot and five passengers. The Dragonfly will have full wireless equipment either by Morse code or by direct speech through wireless telephones. The two de Havilland Fox Moths owned by the Company are also fitted with Gipsy Mayor engines, so that thg engines of all he, machines will be interchangeable. The managing-director of the company, Mr J. C. Mercer has cabled the order. At the Warden’s Court applications were to-day granted as follows: Edward Gibb, ordinary'prospecting license 100 acres.
