FOLLOW WET NIGHT.

During the 24 hours ended nine o ’clock this morning, 1.25 inches of rain fell in and around the city, with heavier falls in Central Otago. The main south road was badly flooded yesterday, and traffic to-day is diverted by the Conical Hills route. The highway to Central Otago, via Milton is 'blocked by a big slip between Beaumont and Raes Junction. In the city rain caused several slips on the roads, the worst being on Cape Saunders road and Port Chalmbers Spit road, which may prevent traffic for some days. The rail routes are all clear.

AMERICAN STORMS.

SIOUX CITY, April 25.

North-west lowa is without telegraph and telephone communications, owing to the worst storm in history. Rain and snow preceded a blizzard, with a forty-miles an hour wind. Tho temperature was 35. Railways and buses were halted or delayed at Benton, Arkansas. Wind, hail and electrical storms in portions of Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama killed three and injured more than fifty. The tornado was responsible for two deaths and lightning one.

Property damage is high, and is estimated at 40,000 dollars here alone.
