MOTOR SPIRIT New Fixed Rates (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 26. Regulations issued to-night, as a supplement to the Ga-zette, provide that the price at which a retailer in Wellington may sell motor spirits shall be Is lid per imperial gallon for standard grade motor spirits, and 2s pei' imperial gallon for premium grade motor spirits. The wholesale price is. fixed at Is 8d per gallon for standard grade motor spirit, and Is 9d per gallon for premium grade. CANTERBURY PRICES. CHRISTCHURCH, April 26. An increase nf ( >ne penny per gallon in the price of petrol in the areas where- the price fixation schemes are operative, was announced by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Hon. D. G. Sullivan, to-day. The increase has been made at. the request of the- wholesalers, and it will apply to North Canterbury, Wellington and Mauawatu. The new price is one bringing these areas into line with those where there is no fixation. The Gazette notice, announcing the new price, was issued to-night, and tjie higher prices will become, operative from the date of issue, according to advice from an official ,of the Industries and Commerce Department, received this evening from Wellington. In | North Canterbury area, the increased I prices will be: 'For super grade 2s; i for ordinary standard Is lid; with commensurate differentials in certain I districts, as laid down by the previous fixation regulations. REASON FOR NEW PRICES. OVERSEAS COSTS HIGHER. CHRISTCHURCH, April 26“Regarding the petrol prices, I wish it to be understood, ’’ said Hon- D- GSullivan, “that this increase was justifiable after a full and careful enquiry had been made into all of the circumstances. The increase i- necessitated by circumstances entirely beyond the control of the Government as it has been found, upon investigation, that the overseas prices of petrol had shown a steady increase during the last several months, and the yanker freight rates had shown a- marked advance. Thp increase is in no way attributable to conditions within the Dominion.’-
