WELLINGTON, April 24. John Arthur Rawden Blandford, aged °4 years, a law clerk and repiesenta tive cricketer, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-day with the theft of £137 2s from his employers, Perry, Perry and Pope, barristers and solicitors, between October 12, 1936, and April 7. 1937. Mr AV. F. Stillwell. S.M., was on the Bench. The accused was not represented by counsel. Detective-Sergeant Doyle, who prosecuted. said that the alleged defalcations were expected to be considerably in excess of the figures mentioned, as lengthv investigations would have to be made. He asked .for a remand until April 28. . . ... Tn order to expedite inquiries, it would be necessary to keep the accused at the Central Police Station, and he asked for an order to this effect. The accused had offered the police his assistance in tracing the etc ficieneies. , , No application for bail was made oj Blandford, who was not called upon to enter a plea. Floodlights used by a trawler, probably the Nora Niven, for hauling in the catch at night, are believed to have been mistaken for the distress sionals reported to have been seen off Kererangu. Considerable anxiety and activity on the part of shipping and bv other officials was caused last night and this morning, when the report was received that a vessel was in distress. WELLINGTON, April 24. At the invitation of the Miniter of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser),, the Government members of last session s Education Select Committee of the House of Representatives have been meeting in Wellington for the past few davs to analyse and consider the comments of education authorities on the recommendations of the Parliamentary Recess Education Committee of 1030- , The opinions of these members will be submitted to the Minister* of Education, who will give them consideration with a view .to framing draft legislation. The ultimate responsibility for the form of legislation will take will rest with the Minister and the Government. It is intended that ample opportunity will be given o those public bodies, organisations and persons interested to give evidence before the full Education Committee prior to the opening of the session It is expected that by adopting this .method time will be saved when the Education Committee of the House i. ‘considering the Bill after its introduction. •
