Browne, D, Sweetman, Ogilvie and J. Saunders. NOTE AND COMMENTS. Ideal conditions favoured the commencement of the West Coast Rugby Union’s competitions on Saturday, and the indications are for one of the most successful seasons in the history of the game on the West Coast. There are numerous new players, and after a few rnoie games all o f the clubs will mould into useful combinations, There were really no surprises in the opening series, but the performance of Ross, one of the new senior teams, which heavily defeated Celtic, was noteworthy, and this side should add a great deal o f interest to the senior, competition. The most evenly contorted game wa s that between United and Excelsiors. ****** Fitness Lacking: In several cases on Saturday there were noticeable signs o f lack of training, but generally .the player’s hung if out exceptionaly well even though it was their first game of the season and the matches were played at a solid pace.

Back Again: M. Scandrett, the former Blaketown and' West Coast representative forward, who played for Albion (Christ, church) last season lias returned to Greymouth and will again don the ( Blaketown jersey. ****** Fruits of Training: Cobden Club, due to the enthusiasm of its members, proved that early preparation for a football season in the form of stiict indulgence in consistent training is a big factor towards any jciub’s success. Cobden seniors strip[ped a vi ry fit team' last Satmday and the results' indicate that the same applied to the junior and th.rd grade team.-i, which both won by good margins. ******* Knee Trouble; An injury to .his knee in Cantcibiiry last season proved a big handicap io J. Polson, the United centre on Salur. day. He, however, displayed brilliance ',n attack on several occasions. He is ve>’v speedy, handles well and is qu.ck to seize an opening. Outstanding: J. Co. Jello, the United five-eightn plavcd a solid game both on attack and’ defence on Saturday. He handled well and got his side out of some awkward predicaments, and went down is •i deteimined manner to stem several Excelsior loose forward rushes. Plenty of Dash: United backs infused great dash into their play when the occasional oppor. tunities came their way. Both wing thiee quarters were given favourable opoprttunities which they turned to good account. D. Caldwell played a dashing gam'e on attack, but his defensive effoits were below par. E. Kibble was a strong attacking force, and his try was the result of nheer determination. Always Reliable: ,S. Hendry the United second fiveeighth was always reliable. He handled proficiently aiid fed his supports un. hesitatingly when cnances came his way. ****** Was Di Right Place: G. Gilbert was the right man in the right place as fullback for United o r ' Saturday, a i he saved his side repeatedly, where less surer handlers would have been in distress. Gilbert was also in good kicking form,’ landing a penalty and converting a try, whilst an. other essay struck the upright, ««»**• Good Leadership: Ron King proved a great leader in the ExcellJ.or pack on Saturday and it was just ill-luck on several occasions that their work was not rewarded with better results. V' rslatilo Half: Securing the lion’s share of the ball from the serum, M. Davidson the Excelsior half got thiough sonic splendid work but his supports were not able to turn the opportunities presented to them to much account against such strong opposition and due to an excusable lack of combination. ****** Consistent Rake: A Turley, the Excelsior hooked secured the ball from' th.> set scrums on Saturday w : tli great, regularity. »»*«»• Fine Forward: H. Bailey, Stars new forward is a fine type of player and he was always in the thick of-' it in the match against Blaketown. Bailey’s height will make him a,valuable line out man. ******* Back Again: Due to the absence of iP. Pascoe from the Blaketown pack, M. Olsen,

who had retired from the game, doniv-d the dub jersey on Saturday. ******* Worked Hard: T. Glenn, the United forward was always at the head of affairs, often har. rasing the opposing backs. He has developed into a very solid’ player. Tiroroa Team: ’The Tioioa seniors, a new team in he Buller competition will be captained, by D, A. Hudson, a lock in the New Zealand University team' which toured Japan last year. INTER-PROVINCIAL MATCHES. WELLINGTON, April 21.
