HARIHARI NOTES

Quite a gloom was cast over the community here when the sad news was received from Hokitika on Saturday morning that Bert (“Mockie”) Simms had passed away early that morning from injuries received the previous evening through being knocked down by a passing motor-car. The deceased had resided in this district for the past three years, having been employed by Mr W. Chisnall as barman for a couple of years. After the hotel changed hands the deceased had been employed on various works by the Public Works Department. “Mockie” was a member of the Harihari football team, being a. very prominent, player last year. The deceased was educated at Westport but came from Christchurch to this district. The funeral took place at Hokitika on Monday last and was attended by a number of residents from this district. The late P. J. McLiskey, who lost his life on Saturday night last between Waiho and Weheka, had resided in this district for 12 months before removing to Weheka. Whilst a resident here deceased was employed by the K.D.V. Sawmilling Co. as boarding-house keeper, but when the mill closed down Mr MeLisky was employed by the Public Works Department at Weheka. Mr Harold Parker, the driver of the car, was also a. resident here for a bief period. ■ Mr P. J. McLean paid a visit to the Flat on Saturday. Mrs Hendrickson, who has been a patient in the Lewisham Hospital, has arrived home again, much improved in health.
