N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIRS.

DECIDED AT AUCKLAND.

(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 7. The largest gathering yet to witness a cycle meeting at Western Springs Stadium attended the New Zealand amateur cycling championships yestei’ day afternoon, and evening. Auckland riders were particularly successful on tire banked concrete oval, which goes 517 yards to the lap. An outstanding periormer was A, G. Patrick (Auckland), who won tho 10 miles paced title in a sensational (manner by over one lap, and in tho Dominion record, time of 20min 33sec. This is a reduction of 56 seconds on the previous record, held by H. R. Dwight. The sprint, title, 100! metres, was contested in the -final of three match races between R. T. Taylor and J. H. Wade. Taylor gained the decision with two heats. The thousand metres time trial end' ed remarkably with a triple dead-heat between the 1936 title-holder, G. R* Giles, J. C. Murray (Canterbury), and J. H. Wade (Auckland). All broke M. P. Byrnes’ Dominion record by onefifth of a second, to clock lmin 16 2-sscc. In the junior events, J. L. Thomson (Canterbury) was far superior to thq other contestants, and won both with apparent ease. In the Italian Pursuit championship, Canterbury, Wellington, and Auckland entered teams. During the afternoon, Canterbury defeated Wellington, but did not contest with Auckland. Auckland, owing to a brilliant effort by Patrick over a final lap, won the title, and returned a time two seconds faster than that of Canterbury. The 1937 champions are:— One thousand metres time trial—J. C. Murray and G. R. Giles (Canterbury), and J. H. Wade (Auckland). One hundred metres sprint—R. T. Taylor (Auckland). Ten miles paced—A. G. Patrick (Auckland). Half mile and five mile junior—J. L. Thomson (Canterbury). Champion team —Auckland (A. G. Patrick, R. S. Triner, C. R. Gooder, and R. T. Taylor). The champion results are-. — 1000 metres time trial: Murray and Giles. (Canterbury), Wade (Auckland) dead-heat; time lmin 16 2-ssec, a New Zealand record. 100 metres' sprint: R. Taylor (Auckland) 1; J. H. Wade (Auckland) 2. The times of the three match races were: First, Wade lmin 12 4-sses; second, Taylor lmin 13 l-ssec. Ten miles paced: A. G. Patrick (Auckland) 1, E. L. G. Hughes (Auckland) 2, M. P. Byrnes (Auckland) 3. Time 20min 33sec, a New Zealand record. Half mile junior final: J. L. Thomson (Canterbury) 1, R. M. Kidd (Canterbury) 2, H. R. Baldwin 3. Time lmin 43sec. Five miles junior: J. L. Thomson (Canterbury) 1.
