(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, March 5. The Greymouth watersiders’ annual picnic takes place at Cass Square tomorrow. Mr G. I. Martin, Commissioner ot Crown Lands for Westland, who has been stationed at Hokitika for the past rear is to transfer to Blenheim, at the end of the month. He will be succeeded by Mr King, of New Plymouth. Th death took place yesterday of Mr John H. Croawell, of Beach Street, and formerly of Harihari. A native of Westport' 67 years of age, he con. ducted farming for som e years at Harihari. He leaves a widow and family of three sons, Arthur (Kanieri) and Charles and David, both of Te. taho; ono daughter, Mrs Dawson (Auckland), seven sisters, Mrs Green (Auckland), Mrs Hughes/ Mrs Patrick, Mrs Bartlett (all of Auckland), Mrs Stent (Collingwood) and Mrs Schieve (Palmerston North); and four broth, ers, Samuel ('Wesrtporjt), Ch'arles (China), Joseph (Wanganui) and Robert (Australia). The Acclimatisation Society last night decided to recommend an open season “or opossums this year for the same period as last. Judging by their depredations in the forests it would do no harm to have an open season all the year round and wipe them out. The Chief Inspector of Fisheries advisi d it would, recommend supplying the Society with 400,000 quinnat salmon ova, if available. It was decided to ask Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., to re. quest the Internal Affairs Department to make a free grant of rainbow trout, ! he Department having stated it was unable to do so to enable Lake Mahinepua to be stocked. The Licensing Committee to-day granted the following applications:— Wm, Dempster, Perry Range Hotel, Jacksons, accommodation £5; C. F. Crampton, transfer of Lake lanthe Hotel, Pukekura to E. F. H. Chisnail; (!- W. Keller, transfer of Keller’s I/ctel, Hokitika, to Chas. Costello; Alary Lees, transmission of Royal Hotel, Greymouth, as from late A. Lee?; Mrs Jeffries, transmission of wholesale license as from late W. Jeffries. At the Court to-day, when the wages claim, J. McLean v. Rimu Flat Dredging Coy. was mentioned, Mr Elcoek, plaintiff’s counsel, said the hearing would take a full day and counsel for both sides, would be coming from Wellington. Mr P. J. O’Regan would represent plaintiff an fl Mr F. O’Leary, K.C-, the defendants. The hearing was ser down for March 17. Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., presided over to-day’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court. Judgment for plaintiff by default for £3 3s lid and costs, was given in the ease Henry Hamer v. RMcLean. One man was fined 10s and costs 12s for being found on licensed premises after hours whilst: on a similar charge another offender was fined 5s with costs 10s. Charles S. Neville, Inspector, Department of Agri, culutre, proceeded against Noah Har. ris, Herbert Maxwell Coulson, Thomas J. Meharry and John Monk for failing to - commence and continue to destroy rabbits on their land at Kokatahi and Koiterangi as required by Section 6 of the Rabbit Nuisance Act, 1928. A final adjournment to next Court day was granted. Dudley Collins (Mr Eleock) was charged with driving in a dangerous manner on the main highway between Weheka and Inangahua, and with driving in a reckless manner over the Hokitika railway bridge. The first charge was withdrawn and on the second charge he -was fined £1 with costs 18s. The Inter. Wanagnui Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd. (Mr Murdoch) pleaded guilty to a charge of selling butter containing an excess of water to the amount permitted in the regulation standard. The evidence showed that butter purchased in a Greymouth shop and upon analysis was found to contain more than 16 parts per cent, of water. The company was fined £5, with costs £1 2s 6d. Tennis fixtures for Sunday are: Three Mile v. Sea View, at Three Mlle; Arahura v. St. Mary’s, at Arahura. The points for the competition are as fol. lows: Three Mile 8, St. Mary’s 6, Arahura 6, Sea View 0. At the Warden’s Court applications granted were: H. D. James, five prospecting licenses each 100 acres, Block 3,-Kanieri; W. Rogers, prospecting licenses, 74 and 56 acres, Provisional State Forest 1621 and Crown Land and road reserve, Waimea; South Westland Rimu Timber Co., increased water supply, water race license, Okarito, 29 additional heads for sawmill, ing purposes; John Clother, prospecting licenses. 11 and 48 acres on scenic reserves, Okatrio; Alfred W. Purcell and John Engholt sought two prospect, ing licenses of 15 and 100 acres, scenic reserve, Waiho. —Referred to responsible Ministers for consent. Hatters Flat Mining Co. sought to surrender claim, water races and two dams. — Surrender of claims granted, and others referred to Minister for consent.
