WAIUTA NOTES

The many local frrends of the late Mr Frank Rollerson, heard with sin cere regret of his death, which occurtp I suddenly at Reefton on Sunday morning. His death adds another to the growing list of victims of miners phthisis. The late Mr ' 'an active interest in labour matters, and had occupied executive P^ 10 * 3 on the Inaugahua Miners Union . H was also actively connected with sport, and was an executive member of the Inaugahua Rugby League Sub-Centre. To the widow, family, and relatives is extended the sympathy oi a wide circle of friends. Mr; R. Taylor,_ a wellknown resident of the township was a brother-in-law of deceased. Mr. W. McCarthy, the well-known local golfer and cricketer, who was injured at the mine some few weeks back, is now about again.. _ Rev Father Butler, parish priest 01 Reef ton, was a vsitor during the weekend He was accompanied by his mother Mrs. J. Butler, Manaia, Taranaki, who was the guest of Mrs. Nohra during her stay. Cricket fixtures for the coming week-end are as follows: Nelson Creek A v. Waiuta at Waiuta. Nelson Creek B v. Reefton .at Nelson Creek; Bell Hill a bye. There will be no further fixtures until after the nolidaMr. T. J. Lewellyn, headmaster of the Waiuta school left on Tuesday, en route to England and Wales for an extended holiday. Prior 'to his departure he was suitably entertained by friends atl the club rooms, and was the recipient of an appropriate presentation. Acting under instructions from the Education Department, the local school was closed, as from Tuesday until Feb. 2nd, 1937. This action was found necessary owing to the outbreak Ox infantile paralysis. A rumour has been current that cases have occurred in the vicinity of Waiuta, but this has not been confirmed. Mr. J. Nelson, who' has been confined to his room for the past week, is now making satisfactory progress. Arrangements are well in hand for the initial tournament of the Waiuta Boxing Club to be held in the Miners’ Hall this Saturday afternoon. Owing to the large number of bouts, the programme will commence at 2 p.m. sharp. Messrs A. Beban (Greymouth) and F. O’Neill ((Runanga), will referee the bouts. The following entries have been received for the various classes. Three stone: Max Mitchell, Reg Barron, Jim Smith (alUWaiuta). Four stone: Ron Mitchell, Jack Smith, Les Coulson, Bryan Smith, Terry Smith, Leo Baird, Pat Lines. Colin Bayley (all Waiuta). Five Stone: Jeff Rose, Bill Rodden, David Douglas, Ted Rose, Trevor Holmes (all Waiuta), E. Newcombe (Reefton), J. Fox (Reefton). Six stone: Ken Rodden, Ron. Smith (Waiuta), A. Mclnnis (Wallsend), A. Cowan (Dobson), K. Mountford (Dobson), E. Williams (Reefton). Seven Stone: T. Hoggarth (Dobson) iJ. Heslop (Reefton), Eugene Nelson (Waiuta), Des Darby (IWaiuta), W. Mountford (Dobson). Special 4, 2-minute round bouts have been arranged as follows: Eric Coulson Bst (Christchurch) v. E. Wick 7.12, (Dobson). C. Mathieson (Reefton) 9.8 v. D. Kearns (Reefton) 9.11. V. Adams (Waiuta) 11.8 v. Dick Hall (Waiuta) 11.6. A. Kennedy (iWaiuta) 10.8 v. J. Anderson (Waiuta) 10.2. A number of cups and medals have \ been donated by supporters in the township and surrounding districts. The ‘public are reminded that doors will open at 1.30 sharp and the moderate price of Is 6d is being charged for admission.
Mr Frank Bell (Greymouth) was a visitor during the week. The mine was idle on Monday for the proclamation of His Majesty King George VT. There were no local celebrations.
