SWIMMING
CENTRE’S ANNUAL MEETING. At the annual meeting of the West Coast Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association last evening there were present Messrs. G. Walters (President). W. Gieseking, B. R. Casey. K. E. Balchin. W. Payne (Greymouth Club), Al. R. Bunt (Beetton). P. R. Quinn (Marist), F. Costello (Reefton) and the secretary, Mr A. B. Lane. An apology for his absence was received from Mr F. W. Baillie. The Otago Centre wrote soliciting the support of the West Coast Centro to have the headquarters of the New Zealand Association shifted from Christchurch. Mr Bunt said the main point of Otago’s argument was that P. BMathieson (Otago - ) should have been sent to the Olympic Gaines. It was pointed out that Ibis Centre favoured the visitation of overseas swimmers to New Zealand from which there was more gain. A letter was also received from the New Zealand Council on the subject refuting the allegations of the Otago Association. It was decided to instruct the Centre delegate to support the New Zealand Council. The annual report of the president (previously published) was read and adopted. The balance sheet, shoving n credit balance of £3 3s 4<l was read and adopted. A discussion ensued on the po>sibili ties of creating greater interest in swimming, particularly amongst school children. JI was suggested by Mr Bill chin that representations be made to have swimming lessons compulsory in schools. Mr Balchin was appointed to wait on the headmaster of the Grey Alain School regarding the mat I er. The election of otlieers resulted as follows: Patron. Dr W. McKay (re elected): President. Mr G. Wallers (re elected); Vice-Presidents, Dr. !'. 1.. Foote (Westport). C. C'oxall senr. (Reefton); Treasurer. Mr F. W. Baillie (re-elected): Htindiftipper. Mr W. It. Gieseking (re-elected); Delegate to New Zealand Council, Mr 11. D. Gil lespie. Christchurch (re-elected); Auditor, Mr A. B. Lane. Mr Taino, the re tiring secretary declined to accept nomination for the coming year, and the chairman was requested to endeavour to find a suitable man to till the position. Mr Lane was accorded a. hearty vote of thanks for his past services. NEW WOMEN’S RECORD. (Received October 21. at 8.1.3 p.m.) AMSTERDAM. October 20. Nid<i Senfl' covered 150 yards backstroke in one minute forty-five and four-tenth seconds, establishing a women’s world record.
