TAXI INQUIRY

GOOD WORK DONE In South Island (Per Press Association). PARLIAMENT BLDGS., October 20. The investigation by the committee set up by the Government into the taxi-cab and carry ng businesses in New Zealand has resulted in full evidence being tendered on a’l aspects of the question from local body "representatives, State Departments, and operators an,] employees engaged in the indust r es. stated Hon. R. Sample’, Minister of Transport., to-day. The committee, according to .the chairman. Air P. M. Buti’cr, said the Minister, was part'eularly pleased with the ev dence submitted. an ( ] the indications were that all concerned realised the necessity for an overhaul and a reformation of the services, and were co-operating with the committee in the effort to probe every aspect affecting the services,, with the. object of arriv'ng at a. solution of the many problems associated with them. Li addition to the public hear'ngz of evidence relative to the matters con'ainejl in the order of reference of the committee, questionnaires had been drawn up for submiss’on to operators and emjJoyees. These had been distributed, and were bejng returned, in a very complete manner. It was emphasised that the questionnaires were not drawn up as a test of any part'cular unit or organisation, but that the information contained in them woulj be; analysed to give an indica 1 tion of the nat'onal' importance and a=pects of the services. Air Semp’e thanked those who hhd already sent in returns, which were very helpful to the committee. The Minister said he was pleased to note, from press references, that during the committee’s sojourn :.u the South Ist land, it had suggested meet:ngs of the interested parties, which; up to then, had been at variance with each other. Such meetings had been held at Christchurch, Dunedin, and Inverearg’ll. At these ineetf.ngs, tentative arrangements had been made to meet immediate pressing problems in those centres, and in each case unanimous decisions had been arrived at dealing w’th these immediate problems until the committee’s report was completed. These conferences had done much good, ami had resulted in h. min'mum wage being adopted in each centre, where the v-ommission system ha,] been cam',’ng chaos. The committee is proceeding as quickly as it possilv'v can w'th its investigations, the Alinistcr added, and it hopqs to complete iLs> report at an early date.
