JIMMY WALSH RETAINS TITLE. LISTER DEFEATED’ BY SOUTH AFRICAN. LONDON, October 19. At the National Sporting Club, Jimmy Walsh retained 'the British lightweigh title. outpointing Harry Mizler, at London. Eddie Maguire (South Africa) defeated Harry Lister (New Zealand) on a technical knock-out in the fifth round, at Wolverhampton. SATURDAY NIGHT’S BOUT. A good contest is assured boxing fans on Saturday night at the Town Hall when Joe Hall and Clarrie Rayner meet. Both contestants tire at the height of their careers, and [he fight is an important, one for both of them. .Hall who has arrived til Greymouth, is the Australian featherweight champion, while Rayner is the New Zealand tea I hei weigh | champion, and it will be surprising- if they do not provide Ta thrilling rounds, and give boxing in Grevmoiitli a fillip. Ifayiier’s reported retirement from the ring has definitely been contradicted. and he .is fitter than ever, and anxious to enhance his already bright record. Both are clever, fast boxers ond Hall has a particularly dangerous right. Judging by their respective styles, there should be a minimum of in-fighting, and a maximum of entertaining, hardhitting boxing. Four special amateur preliminaries will precede the main contest, for which the usual train arrangements have been made on the Hokitika line. Seats may be reserved at Kilgour's. HALL V. A fast, flashy boxer> wjth a good punch bo back up his boxing ability, Hall has finished many of his bouts by the short route, and is considered the finest boxer to visit the country since Tommy Uren. H's repertoire consists of everything that a. good class fighter should possess—a beautiful left hand that can be used straight,, booked, or ripped; a right hand that carries l T.N.T. in n flashing overhand punch or uppercut. His defence is also marvellous to see, and is reminiscent of Harry Holmes at his best. The hallmark of quality. is on his every move, and his exhibition should please the most caustc of critics who aver that sciemtific boxing is a lost art.
Clarrie Rayner’s fighting ab-ity is well known .in Greymouth, as indeed it is all over New Zealand, particularly in Wellington, where he recently thrashed the wifi-known Billy Aitken in a wonderful bout. Rayner is an improving fighter, who., having seiv ed his apprenticeship in a hard school, has the ability to make any featherweight fight his very harden. Raynor : s improving in every bout, and his chances of excelling himscf and beating the Australian champion are considered quite good. His last bout with Hall met with a verv m xod reception in Wanganui, and has work'-<l (himself into wonderfu 1 condition for the coming bout.
