Racing Notes

kumara racing club. At the annual meeting of the Kumara Racing Chib, Mr. J. Gilbert, Presided, and in his annual report congratulated members on the success ot the Club’s Jubilee fixture. Despite the large increase in stakes, the report stated that the balance to the credit of the club’s account was; £3O/ 14/5, being an increase of £l2O/.is/J.i compared with the previous year. Thanks were due to former members of the club and others for the substantial help in the way of donations and to present members for personal guarantees. Stakes were increased by £2ll over those given the previous year, hut against that, members’ fees had increased bv £22; voluntary contributions £2B/6/6; totalisator receipts £O5/2/9; gates £3l/0/-; privileges

£l5, and an extra refund of 1] P er cent. £64/8/-. making a total increase ol '’2ll/3/3. The ('haii'innn advocated the club increasing its stakes, as cir cunistniiees permitted, in order Io atIract. a belter class of horse. The chairman’s report and balance sheet were adopted. The elei'tion ol oftieers resulted in all the former officials being appointed as follows, with lhe addition of Mr 11. Parker as a steward: President, Mr .1. Gilbert; vii-e-pre /ident, Mr A. B. Spiers; judge, Mr R. Ford; deputy judge, Mr J. Reedy; handicapper, Mr J. Noble; handicapper, trots, Mr G. Paul; starter, Mr G. Reed; timekeeper, Mr A. P>. Spiers; judicial committee, Messrs J. Gilbert. A. P>. Spiers. R. Ford, C. Burger, IL Hamer; stewards, Messrs W. Stewart. .1. Reedy, A. B. Spiers. R. Ford, M. t'ameron, \ . T.lovd, .1. Me Vicar, L. De we, W. .1. Inglis, 1 1. Hainer, J. Gilbert. F. Wise, D. McLean and H. Parker; secretary-treasurer, Mr (I. Paminenl. Taitorn: An interesting entrant for Rangitikei is Taitorn, who gave promise as a fou.r-year-old but has been off the scene now for nearly two seasons. Red Mandfred: In the King .Edward Handicap at Ellerslie the pace wtts not very fast in the early part and this might have induced Red Manfred’s rider to take him to the front at the end of three furlongs. It was suicidal tactics and the result was that the Manfred gelding was collared and beaten into fouith ’place after holding his lead to Hie distance. This run was illuminating and suggests that the horse may soon be back to his best. Now down to 8.13 in the Wellington Handicap he is a strong possibility in that race. Dark Shadow:

One of the most promising handicap performers seen at Ellerslie was undoiibtcdlv Dark Shadow, who was making his first appetirance in open company. He was always handy in the Mitchelson Cup, trailing the pacemaker, Con Fuoeo, into the straightittnd then finishing tin excellent fifth. His appearance in the handicap on the Dlonday was awaited, but his owner took on the open mile instead and was beaten into third place. Had _he started in the King Edward Handicap he might have seriously bothered Scotland. He is engaged in the New Zealand Cup, but he will probably give this a miss and contest some of the shorter races, concluding with the Dletropolitan Handicap on the final dav.

FcrsGH * Fersen went a good race in the Dlitchelson Cup and this should stand him in good stead if he is asked to take on the New Zealand Cup. He was up against it in drawing number 15 at the barrier, for this entailed covering a lot of ground. When Mazir made a forward move in the back stretch Fersen moved up on the inside of him. So they raced to the half-mile, where Mazir continued on the outer while Fersen was able to cross over to the rails and lie right up on the heels of the leaders turning for home. Tn this respect he had 1 a better run by far than Dlazir, who did not pull up well after the race

Palermo to Try Again: Palermo, a few years ago one of the best sprinters in the South Island, has been nominated tor short events at t le Gore meeting, so evidently hopes are held that he may stage a comeback Now ten years old, Palermo won the Telegraph' Handicap tit Trentham m 1931" the day on which Stanchion won the Cup. but last season he failed Io gain a place in six starts.

Aube: „ After being off lhe scene for three seasons—he ran previously only three times as a two-year-old—Aube was produced twice late last season and he ran third at Dannevirke and second (toMay Song) tit Awtipuni. In his Awapni effort he looked like being an early winner. Now six years old tins Arausio gelding is a brother to Pakitere and a half-brother to Toxeuma, and he was secured from his breeder last season bv Mr. J. McDonald, ot Dannevirke, for whom he is being trained bv A. C. Plummer.

A Successful Plunge: ~ The Epsom-Metropolitan double, won bv Capris and Young Crusader respectively, was not as good a result for the bookmakers as the respective quotations of the two horses might hav indicated. Some bookmakers laid the double for considerable amounts, lhe largest winner was a man from South Australia, whose happy task was i the collection of his winnings. Altogcthei this man backed the combination tor £91,000, and his appearance at tne settling at Tattersail’s was practically the only interesting feature. We was paid in cash by the bookmakers with whom he had had transactions and was visibly affected as the last

of the winnings was paid. Wher. Capris ran second to Gay Lover, and then received the race on a protest, the backer took the occurrence as an omen of good fortune, and decided to retain his full interest in the double. He did not hedge any of his investments and received the full reward of his courage.
