CAULFIELD CUP

Won by Outsider FROM THE BACK. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received October IS, at 7 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 18. There was an enormous attendance for the second day of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s meeting. The official figures arc that those present numbered 63,225. which is a record. The weather was line and bright. A despised outsider, North .Wind, finished brilliantly to win the Caulfield Cup. He was purchased only a few weeks ago for 500 guineas by Colonel Cohen, with a view to to-day’s race. North Wind gave a poor display in the Herbert Power Handicap on the first day of the meeting, running last, and his chance was discounted'. He is trained by Cecil Godby, who has wou the race previously with Gain Carrington and Purser.

S'lver Standard ran a great rate in the Cup, and was beaten in the last few strides. Talking put up a good effort, and made most of the pace. Gay Blonde finished’ strongly in the fourth place. Desert Chief and Gay Circle ran a satisfactory race, but Gohlen Promise never looked dangerous. Onewhetu was always near the rear. Percival, rider of One Whetu, states the horse finished well, and might have gained a place if lie had been able to begin faster.

Another rank outsider, Arbalest, outstayed a hot favourite, Siren, to win the Burwood Handicap, his first success. Mr Kemball’s Bazaar finished brilliantly, but just failed. Tn the Mona Nursery Handicap. Ena showed improved stamina., compared with last week. Barometric finished brilliantly or. the reins in the Gwyn Nursery, and beat the pacemakers, Nightgnard and Sir Grey. 'The New Zealander, Silver Bond, having its first outing, made the pace early, and gave a promising effort. Royal Quex was never dangerous.

Seymour had a runaway victory in the Wvuna Steeplechase. The rider, Fullarton. won it lasf year on Wirrate. Cynical Kid made up ground to run a poor fourth. Ogwell, winner of Iho Windsor Handicap, completed a double for the rider, H, Badger. Gay Pop had every show. Press Gang finished in a brilliant manner. Radiant Star never looked dangerous. Silver Ring has a slight soreness, but it is riot regarded as being serious. Results:—

Talking led into the straight, and was immediately challenged by Silver Standard, but North Wind finished brilliantly to win by half a length, with half a neck between Silver Standard aud Talking. Then came Gay Blonde, Petit Fils, Desert. Chief. Gay Circle, Prince Sion and Golden Promise, with Cardo last. Time 2.28:'}.
