POISONING TRAGEDY
Father and Daughter (Per Press Association). WHANGAREI, October 16. A tragedy occurred at the remote Thom’s Landing, in the far north, vrhen a father, making what he thought was a simple family medicine, prepared a deadly poison, which caused the death of himself and his daughter. The victims were Mr Griffiths, aged 40 and a two-year-old girl, Annie. The family recently had taken possession of their home, and Griffiths found a yellow' pow’der, which he believed was sulphur, but which was sheep dip. The. powder, which had been used as an insecticide by the previous occupants, was mixed with treacle. He partook of a dose and gave some to Annie, but his wife, and Elsa, and their eldest son refused to take it, owing to its disagreeable taste. When the father and daughter became violently ill, the wife rode on horseback to Tckao, but tne victims died before help arrived. Thom’s Landing- is one of the most northerly points of the gumfields, and is very remote.
