HOKITIKA NOTES
(Ou r Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, October 10. Rough sea conditions along the coast prevented the Hokitika sailing to-day. The following will represent the Kiwi Football Club against Westport to-day, at Cass Square; Morgan (2), Bradley, Davidson, .Spence, Hanrahan (2),*S. Roberts, W. Douglas, Pierson. Leslie, Adams, Diedrichs, Harris, Harvey, Parker, Thompson. It is understood that Mr C. J. Sanders, the well-known brewer for Westland Brewery, has received an important- appointment in Christchurch, and will be leaving Hokitika shortly. Miss Ettie Black is visiting Hokitika, staying with her uncle at Keller’s Hotel.
Guests at Keller’s Hotel include; Mr and Mrs Paton, Manley, Sydney; Mr and Mrs A. Thompson, Auckland; Capri and Mrs AV. C. Preece, Nauru Island; Miss A Hart, [Portland, Oregan, U.S.A.; Mr R, Meyer, Welling ton; Mr F Bostock, Christchurch; Mr N. A Vercoe, Nelson; Mrs Hay, Nelson; Mr Heath. Sydney; Mr W. L. Littlewood, Auckland; and Miss M. Witty, Christ church. At the annual meeting of the Kanieri Tennis Club on Tuesday evening, Mr R. Whiley presided over a good attendance. The balance-sheet, showing a credit of £lO 18s 4d, was adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows; President, Miss Learmoni; VieePcsidents, Messrs R. Whiley, T. Chesterman, E. Ptahlert, Al. Woolhouse. A. Pawson, T. Boyd, C. Hcwat and B. Boyd; Committee, financial members, six* to constitute a quorum; Club Cap-’ tain, E. Pfahlert; Vice-Captain, V. Pawson.’ The subs, were fixed' at: Gentlemen 15s; ladies 10s; juniors ss; reducable to 10s, 7s 6d and 2s 6d if paid by the end of November. The date of the opening day was fixed for Saturday, October 31st. The death of Ronald, 22-months-old son of Mr and Mrs J. Williams, Bealey Street, occurred at the Westland Hospital this morning. At the last meeting of local shopkeepers, a committee was appointed to take the necessary steps to change the day of the weekly half-holiday from Wednesday to Saturday. A communication was forwarded to the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, seeking his advice as to what could be done to make the desired alteration. A reply has been received confirming the previous opinion of the Labour Department at Greymouth that any intended change must be made by the individual shopkeepers. As a thorough canvass of the business people was made, resulting in a very large majority in favour of the Saturday closing, a’ requisition is now being made to forward to the Labour Department, intimating the intent.on of the signatories to change the day of their weekly half-holiday to Saturday, the change to take effect from January Ist next. The death occurred last, evening, at her residence, Bealey Street, of Mrs Rosa Norman, aged 89. A native of London, she came to Victoria in the davs of the gold rushes, and spent three years at Ballarat. She .anded hero in 1866, and resided since at Ross, then at Kanicri. where she matriod the late Mr Charles P. Norman, who was in business at that. time. Later proceeding to Kokatahi, they conducted the Kokatahi Hotel for many years and in 1912 retired to live privately in Hokitika, where she had resided ever since. Her husband, who was wellknown in the district, predeceased her some fen years ago. She will be remembered by many of a former generation as of a kindly and generous aisposirion, whose passing will be regretted. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs J Goodsail, of AVaverley, Sydney, andl Mrs Uv, Kurnbach, Piapanut, Christchurch, and one son, Henry Norman, of Hawke’s Bay, also several <rrand children. The funeral will take place at 11 a.m.. to-morrow. The annual meeting of the Southern Cricket Sub-Association was held las. evening, when the following delegates were present; Messrs F. McCabe (Ruataptt, (President), C. L. Harper (Vice-President), D. J. Spence (Hokitika), T Growcott (Rimu), J. Cou - son (Ross), and J- Howat (Moodstock). The following officers were elected for the ensuing season: President Mr F. McCabe; Vice-President, Mr’c. L Harper; Secretary-Treasurer. Mr J- Howat. The appointment of Mr 0 Morris as delegate to the West Coast Cricket Association was confirmed. It was decided that, nominations for a senior competition (Sunday) an a Saturday competition close on October 20th, and that the Sunday competition commence on October 25 th. itie invitation of 'the West Coast Cncke Association to play a rep. match, at Hokitika on the first Sunday in December was accepted. The Secretary | was instructed to write to the Botoug Council, requesting that Cass Square be nut in a satisfactory condition for p',ay The report stated that Hokitika A won the Senior Keller Cup. with Woodstock runners-up. Hokitika A, were narrowly defeated by Marist A, Greymouth, in the final for t he Wing ham Cup. A bat, donated by Mr RFord, for the batting average, was won bv G. King, Ross. M r C. Sanders presented a bat for the team winning the championship, and this was won by Hokitika.
